Concrete Additives & SCMs
Both microsilica and ggbs are key supplementary cementitious materials used in concrete to enhance strength durability and sustainability
Micro Silica (Silica Fume)
- Particle Size: Extremely fine (much finer than cement)
- Function in Concrete:
- Fills pores (micro filler), increasing density
- Significantly improves strength (especially early strength)
- Increases durability and resistance to chemicals
- Improves resistance to chloride and sulfate attacks
- Typical Use: High-performance concrete (HPC), bridges, marine structures, etc.
GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag)
- Function in Concrete:
- Replaces part of Portland cement (usually 30–70%)
- Reduces heat of hydration (good for mass concrete)
- Improves long-term strength
- Enhances durability and reduces permeability
- Typical Use: Mass concrete works, sustainable construction, structures exposed to aggressive environments
